Sure, it's unusual to open up with Valjean stealing the bread and then follow him the entire time he's in prison, which means they don't even get to Paris until the last half-hour or so, but by god the whole thing works.Īnd props to Anthony Perkins for his performance. The musical captures the scope and scale of the book better, but the non-musical focuses in more on Valjean and Javert and is all the better for it. From what I recall of 98, I would say it butchered the narrative pretty thoroughly, opting for an out-of-nowhere confrontation between Javert and Cosette of all people in the climax.īetween 20, I'd give the leg up to the latter.
